"Always Rotating" Objects
« on: 2008-06-13, 12:06:07 »

I'm hoping this hasnt already been covered somewhere, I had a quick look but couldnt find anything related to this subject.

This has been something on my mind for the last few years. I originally had the idea when I was creating the Dark Future Cityscape map and wanted to place a rotating Radar Dish in top of a building in the spaceport. I found a script called something like "alwaysrotatingobject" or something similar, but it wouldnt work.
I know its possible, because they have rotating fans in the Orsi Factory map.
I've just started a new map project ( a 3 decked nuclear powered submarine ) and want the prop drive shafts to rotate.

How do I do it? I assume I have to make the drive shafts into templates and attach the rotate script to them, but what is the script called?

The script is called "RotateAlways.class". You can add that at a template. After that you have to create a path corner for that template too. Set the origin of the path corner to 90. Then select the Template again and open the codexlinker and set the parameters as you want ( if I remember right, then the lower the number at the float parameter, the faster the objekt rotates. I set it to 0.5 for a ventilator ) That should work. It works in my maps....

Woot! thanks  ;D I'll give it a try and let ya know how it goes.
Probably wont be at the template making stage till tomorow though, still doing the basic layout and adding in all the various pipes, consoles, chairs, bunks, etc

For a compact steel tube, its certainly a big map though :)

Yay! works perfectly :) Thanks Barnabas. Now my Submarine has propper rotating drive shafts, adds just that little extra to the map, I'll also be adding a rotating radar mast to the surfaced mode too :)
Looking back at the attempt I made in the past, it didnt work because I didnt add the path point to the template.

Finally got my latest mapping project finished  :) I found that adding rotating objects does a great deal to bringing maps to life if done in the right way.

I posted some pics of the project as it progressed, you can view them here http://www.runboard.com/bthecrimsonkeepforum.f10.t114

Next stop, Highgate Sanitarium ;)

Wow. You definitely know how to make technical maps with lots of realistic machinery.

Thanks :) I tend to get a little over-detailed when it comes to machinery, and have a bad habbit of making the fine details from geometry instead of using textures. One day I'll even end up putting each individual rivet on the sides of a cruise liner lol
This one has been a bit of a "come back" map after a long break from mapping, so its been a bit if a re-learning thing.

also thanks for the hosting offer too :) I've put the map up at a temporary download location ( will be removed late tomorow ), you can obtain a copy from there to save me mailing it to you.

Heres the link :

http://crimsonkeep.sim-tek.com/files/Submarine_Base_Map_v1.zip

Its been through a a lot of testing, tweaking and modifying the last couple of days but I cant garantee something hasnt been missed ( always happens ). Anyway, hope people find a use for the map, its a little specialised and I really cant see it being used in a general Vampire theme, but its still a fun map, and was fun to make ( if somewhat stressful at times lol.
Also, if anyone would like the actual .map files, feel free to contact me and I'll send them out :)
