Dragon Age: Origins
« on: 2009-11-22, 21:53:28 »
Ahh now this was a game i had my eye on since quite some time, but also was expecting more of this game... since it was promised to have a better story than Baldurs Gate, and it was called by Bioware the spiritual successor of Baldur Gate without the DnD franchise, well it was still a good game that i DID enjoy played, also it performed quite good on Win7! well lets go about the char creation since this is a part that i enjoy on this kind of game, it was "decent"... and i also think the elves still needed a more Elvish look, they look too NERDY to be honest, most of the hair stiles look taken straight from a 70s nerdy movie, the elves face options were also a little dull, you dont get to choose the leght of the ears or the type of the eyes, skin color, a total letdown but they still looked a lot better than Oblivion, the elves looked pretty much like humans with a slightly pointy ears, the char creation was nothing out of extraordinary but it served its purpose, the story is in fact absorbing, thou i didnt like the 2 elven factions called the Dalish and the City elves, overall elves were taken of all their mytical glory from literature, you get to see them as slaves everywhere and in small portions in the woods fighting to survive even on their own, the dwarves were actually quite enjoyable! their background history and story was really deep, more so than the humans... i would think the Dwarves were praised more in this game that any other Fantasy game, humans werent that interesting... and in fact quite weak somehow, and the story is rather LINEAR... they brute force you to go straight to the main plot untill getting olmost at the end you get to do small side quests, so thats a point taken out.

On the performance DAO performed quite good on win7, i keep getting frame rates from 40-67 in max settings, the game is quite stable and you dont get to see any glitches untill... the end :

***SPOILER***

------Somehow my Alistair companion became really hatefull of this Loghain antihero, i was in the part were i was deciding what to do with this traitor, and Alistair was forcing me to slain Loghain, even though Loghain human side was making itself present and was accepting he lost and that he had done the wrong things to help Ferelden, and Alistair just went berserk and CHOP HIS HEAD! then i was sent over to redcliff to finally assault Darkspawn and somehow... A BIG GLITCH was spotted, half my companions stayed behind defending Denering while the other part came with me to fight the Archdemon or ArchDragon, and the ones that stayed behind where kinda saying their goodbyes in case they or me died in the attempt, and somehow a ghost appear, a non existant Loghain started talking and saying that why did i left him here instead of taking him with me to fight the Archdemon, that maybe here was his place defending Denerim and that it was a Honor for him to have taken him in my party as one of the Greywarden "&#$!? whe-wha-how-why!? i was confused since i didnt knew who was talking to me untill i recognized his voice and read the subtitles, it was him... the decapitated GHOST of Loghain saying his goodbye... ODD, big TIME-------

Well after all DAO was a great game, but not as great as everyone is sayin all arround in the web, least not for me... if i were to rate this game i would give it 8.2, the lack of multiplayer takes a lot of points, odd how Obsidian released an SDK for DAO, without the MP aspect i see the attempt pointless... yet, it was an enjoyable  game, i would recommend it.

I wrote six pages long review, but in czech. Shortly, one of the best games for 5 years, but with sea gamedesigns fails.. 7/10, same as Witcher.
I hate EA hype around this game..

It is a great game, but honestly... Oblivion is much better since its open ended and non linear, besides the engine Oblivion uses is much more complex and much more moddable... dont get me wrong, DAO is probably the BEST RPG of this year, but i expected MUCH more from DAO... i was dissapointed that the game was so lineal and that the combat was SLOW and picky.

I think that DAO uses a much more optimized version of the "Electron Engine", the one NWN2 used. the only bad thing about this engine is that areas are rather small, it does not allow for a free "feel" and each map should be loaded even if its small... i got so damn frustated from the loading screens each time just for entering a damn house, to be honest this type of engine are totally obsolete, at least NOD engine would allow tweaking in many ways, im sure if you give redemption a complete new UI, a new story and new high res/poly models you would think it was a new game.

I probably get it when it's down to the $20 mark.

I've been enjoying this one, but haven't gotten to the end, yet.  Of course, I played NWN 1 for several years and it kept me amused, so no big shock I like DA:O.  I went through Redemption about 6 times before I got tired of it, too.  Safe to say I'm a casual gamer who isn't hard to keep distracted.  As on the other thread, though, I'm also going to try Oblivion out.  I got it and an expansion from a friend of mine over Christmas, and I'll track down some mods before I get into it.

I missed all the hype around DA:O but I'm sure it was thick.  :P  I got interested in it because my boyfriend was playing it on PS3 and was talking about it.  He's also the one who bought me my PC copy since I'm more of a PC gamer than a console.  I've only got a PS1 and PS2, so I'm out of luck on anything new unless it's for my computer.

Its not that great of a game... but it can keep you entertained for a while, i doubt people will actually do cool stuff for DAO with the SDK, honestly that engine is just soo 2003! why would people mess with a SP Engine so limited when you could just Mod tons of other MP Games with better engines? anyway if any good mods come arround for DAO im sure to get them hehe.

This has spoilers in it, so anyone who happens by ... you're warned.

I did a full run and I had to say that I thought the game had more personality than I'm used to.  I don't normally cry at the end of a video game or care about any of the characters.  In this one, I felt almost like I was going through a book at times or a TV series which has particularly well developed characters.   My ending had Alistair giving his life up for my character because he loved her.  Made me tear up... Yeah yeah, I'm a softie, you can laugh.   ;D

The game itself was kind of linear, but I didn't mind.  It grabbed for for unusual reasons.

I really came to care about the characters in that game which was pretty odd for me.  I enjoy good characters in novels or the TV series but video games?  Nah.  It's about killing stuff, exploring, strategy, looting, maybe a puzzle or two, and not so much about characters.  I liked Christof and crew well enough, but he actually existed in the pen and paper WOD so I don't even really count that one.

Most people probably aren't going to play it or take an interest for that reason, but hey... it worked for me.  It even inspired me, oddly enough, so I count it as a success.

I can see where it could lack replay value for a serious gamer, though, and even get a bit tedious.  My boyfriend is still playing it on PS3 and I'm the casual gamer, he's the serious one.  He's already started play a lot less now that he finished and has moved on.

I'll be given DA:O some more attempts, though, to unlock other stuff and endings.  I'll also go through with a male character to see what different stuff happens if you're not playing a female.  That's kind of fun, too.
