Vampire Bloodlines Engine.dll Error

Hey everyone, I know that this is a Redemption focused forum (Probably the better game of the two anyway) but I recently decided to try Bloodlines. I have been getting this error (see below) when trying to launch the game. I have heard that there are several ways to fix this issue, but none of the ones that I have actually found seem to work. I have tried community patches, reinstalling, editing the engine.dll with a hex editor, and still this error occurs. If any of you out there have any idea as to what may be causing the issue, I would appreciate any help you could provide. My system is well-above the required specs too, so I know that is not the issue.

You can also try raising your windows swap file to twice your physical ram, also try running the game as the shortcut "safe mode", last... you should have at least a Pixel Shader 2.0 64MB Video Card (I have runned the game on a old GeForce FX 5200 and a Radeon 9000, both pixel shader 1.2) with latest driver, i assume your problem is related to a Driver Issue... so try old, OLD drivers if newer Drivers dosent work.

I guess thats it.. ah yes, try adding this to your shortcut Command:

vampire.exe" -console -heapsize 512000

By the way, would be helpfull to know what system you got and video card.

If you are unsure what your system is, press on start then choose run then type dxdiag then press enter. If you're running on Vista type dxdiag in the search box slightly above the windows bubble.

In dxdiag mode click the Save All Information button. This will allow you save a dxdiag.txt file. Attach the file to your post or copy past all of the text within text file to the post. This will give us complete information about your hardware.

Thanks for the .dll and information. Sadly none of those methods worked. Half Life 2 runs nearly perfect through this program, so I am surprised to see that Vampire only gets to the level loading screen. It was a major letdown when I got the game to launch and then upon clicked "New Game" it crashes with this error after getting to the loading screen. It does the same thing on Native Windows as well, so I am assuming that this is not a Wine-related issue.
I will try old drivers as well.

Here are some of the system specs to my system:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16ghz
RAM: 2gb
Video Memory: ATI Radeon X1600 128mb VRAM
OS: Mac OS X 10.5.7, sometimes dual booting Windows XP (With SP2)

I think those are probably the only specs you would need. I also have the latest version of DirectX in my Wine environment. Pixel Shader 2.0 support is implemented I believe, I will have to check on that. Since Half Life 2 runs very well, I highly doubt it is missing anything that Vampire would need. Like I said, it also has the same error on Windows as well.

I have also tried the launch commands for setting the DirectX level and whatnot. Still no luck, even with 90, 81, 80, and 70.
Here is a DirectX output log as well as you suggested, I ran it in wine. I am going to try getting that missing .dll, I doubt it will work, but it is worth a try.

Try setting DEP off, go to mypc icon and right clic properties, then go to Advanced tab and then the last of the 3 tabs should be DEP, set it off...

Also try installing vamp on a different pc, see if its your install files or something else.

Should be also good to try run the game on compatibility mode, either win98 or 2000.


As last resort... uninstall the game and delete completely the install folder, also you need to find couple hidden folder under "Program Files" called "InstallShield Installation Information" and "Uninstall Information", DO NOT DELETE THE FOLDERS, ONLY DELETE what is INSIDE those folders... this should fix your game, im 75% sure... i recall having this same issue, and only being able to fix it by deleting what was inside those folders and REINSTALL the game.

I think this happends when you install official patch then the unofficial patch, i would recomend staying away from those Unofficial Patches.

Also you may be using some kind of Emulation Drive or Images, either Daemon or Alcohol... if so, i suggest to uninstall or disable emulation options.

Okay, well I got it to launch in windows this time. I reinstalled again and for some reason, it just worked. This time I launched it before updating to 1.2, but I am unsure if that actually made the difference.
Preferably I would like to get this running it wine, it still has the same error... I am sure that there is some way to run it, as other people have gotten it to run in wine before. Any ideas on what wine might be missing? What drivers would cause this issue? I have the latest version of DirectX installed on wine as well.

Im not sure about wine, i never used anything else appart from Win95, Win98, ME, 2000 and XP... i havent even tried Vista.

Ah, it is a great program for those of us that do not like Windows. I am a Mac user myself, I play the PC version of Redemption through wine. It works just fine thankfully. I used to play the mac version, but since macs now use X86 chips instead of PPC it no longer works. The PC version seems to be slightly superior though, having access to the editing tools is a great asset for my occasional modding.
