Attempting to Install Linux into Virtual PC
« on: 2008-12-29, 22:17:34 »
I ended up with this on attempting to install Fedora Core. Ubuntu also fails.

I'm gonna try Mandriva and openSUSE next.

As I mentioned in another thread, try VirtualBox.  It's free, cross platform and it even has OpenGL support.

OK. I tried out virtual box and it is definitely better, but I don't think it's 3d acceleration actually works. I can't get ubuntu's more advanced appearance features to work. Here's my settings in vbox for ubuntu.

I made a mistake in my last post.  Virtualbox 2.2.2 can do OpenGL acceleration.  I've tried Ubuntu under a Windows XP install, with 1Gb of RAM, with Compiz active and it works pretty well.  Even with the wobbly windows on.

I think I know why 3d acceleration isn't actually working. This might have something to do with requiring a processor that's capable of hardware virtualization. My processor doesn't support virtualization. I guess some day I'll have to upgrade.
