Quadro or Gforce
« on: 2008-02-23, 15:46:51 »
Im looking to buy a new computer given that mine is getting old (takes forever to do production quality raytraced renders) I found myself faced with a hard question:

What type of graphics card to buy, a Quadro or Gforce series.. since I know some people on this forum do some kick@ss graphics but also into gaming I was wondering what would be your answers?

Some of those real time rendering graphics cards don't play games too well. Tends to work the other way too. I do mostly gaming so I'd say the 8800GTS works great - a balance between affordable pricing and good gaming performance. If you're looking for real-time rending graphics cards (which are expensive as hell) then be prepared to fork out at least a $1000. I can't really give any pointers on rendering cards since that is actually a different field than gaming cards.

Thanks, I think Iv decided to go Gforce 8800 since after doing some more reading it seems I  may be able to mod it to act like a quadro card

I can confirm that "gaming cards" can do the job just well for rendering.  I have a GE Force 7300LE and it does the job very well.  I'll likely fork the money on an 8800GTS or whichever new card nVidia releases when I get a decent paying job, as it would allow me to play games with nicer graphics as well as help push some extra visual power during modeling/rendering.

Well any card can render, but what ORI seems to be looking for is a real-time rendering card. Those cards are quite expensive, but will render any image INSTANTLY. The GeForce cards are not normally designed for that.

Nah iv decided Gforce 8800GT/S/X is good enough cause after reading on more forums its said to be better than most of the old quadro cards .
The Quadro 4600 and 5600 which render faster than the 8800 are about 1000$ as you said and dosnt work that well in running real-time(games and so on) not to mention I think Ill have to do some special order to get them in israel.

Dual Gforce 9600 GT also seem a good option and more powerful than a  single 8800 GTX for almost the same price not sure if I can find that around here though since everything get here a year after it first ships in the states
. kind of annoying buying computers cause I know the next day they going to have something stronger and better.
