Mod Half-Life 2?
« on: 2007-04-05, 01:31:29 »
I've been looking at HL2's mod scene and I got to say it is quite impressive. There are specific tutorials and support for everything. Including C++ tutorials involving HL2 modding.

Yes. I just bought the game and am looking at the HL2 SDK right now. According to their HL2 modding wiki, HL2 has solution files that support pretty much any version of VS, including VS 2005 Express. I think this would be the best place for me to actually start. I really think HL2 can help teach me about C++ early. Everything is well organized and appears to be well planned ahead of time.

Now to find out what to mod...

That is so weird that you have you said that. For the past few days, I got all of these ideas in my head. I want to make my own game, of course that is way over my head, mostly due to the time consuming, I cant spend roughly 1 or 2 years to take the time, and make one, plus money, and there is only a few of us who would, so yeah. So I decided I should just do a total conversion mod, I thought maybe for VTMR but I dont think it would be worth it, and I too have been looking at the mod scene for hl2, I have seen some of the conversion mods, pretty nice. I also did see the hl2 modding wiki, but I dunno, yeah, lol

well, what kind of game would you like to make?

i believe that with enough work you can change it quite a bit, though i could be wrong there.

Hl2 was made with hte intention of beeing modded aswell, but really, if you mod something, make it something you have intrests in.

Javokis, the total conversion mod where the player has to escape university while avoiding as many mind controlled teachers as possible. you get a light, a taser and a walking stick as weapon :-p

It can be changed quite a bit, its gone from a Sci-fi FPS, to a fantasy 3rd person RPGhttp://students.guildhall.smu.edu/~eclipse/index.html,but they also had a team of programmers.  I have to look more into it obviously to see if I can even do what I wanted to do, so yeah

My main goal is to try and find SOMETHING that can help me learn the gaming element of C++. I've looked at Ilritch engine (however spelled), as well as Xaltar's recommended engine (Overdose) and have come to realize that organization and high support for new C++ programmers are not common among the freebee games. I've found Overdose's forum to be hard to look at because it doesn't give me any direction. Ilritch tutorials seem non-existant. Not even Doom3 has much detail in its support - it has documentation, but nothing step-by-step.

Half Life is the only one I've found with step by step tutorials and very easy to understand support. Not just a bunch of documents with techno babble. Finally, something with some REAL help for someone like me who has not much of a clue about c++. IT IS NOT JAVA.

i honestly dont know why people insist on teaching java instead of c++, its a bad idea, imo. teaches bad habits, or fails to teach good habits.

well, do you have any idea about what you will do? an rpg? a genre?

in any case, i know some artists looking for mod work, ill tell them what your planing, i might be interested myself. depending on how much time that oblivion mod takes up.

Well it is planned to be something of the rp style of gameplay, but beyond that I'm still thinking. I first need to know what I am CAPABLE of before I know what I am going to do and no it'll not be based on wod - I have already realized that white-wolf will sue me for any attempt to make a wod mod outside of any VtM video game already existant.

As long as its not some kitchy Anime/Manga based style of RPG im all for it.

Maybe you can give a statement on what general settings you are aiming for?

Online pokemon like battle multiplayer mod can be a real hit but only if it can save the individual "pokemons" or "boardies" you level up and teach through the fighting.
(another game that is played only with a GBA emu IMO)
of course prepare a counter case for a lawsuit from Animal rights organizations and Members of this fine boardies rights organizations  :P
I think Pokemon had to sued on that one for allusingly endorsing RL Animal fights.(having two animals kill eachother and bet on the winner) think they won the case somehow or they paid it off.

Either way id prefer WoDal
