Why are they making "copy" movies? Because of all the failed "origional" movies that happened arround september 11th when the twin towers went down. A lot of potentialy good movies did very badly at the box office because of that. Americans wanted heros to make themselves feel safe again, que comic book and game based movies. Now they have been making them so long they are in a rut and its not helped by all the mindless idiots who keep supporting all the bad copy movies. Underworld Evolution sucked but still managed to gross more than double what Battlefield Earth did (a movie I thought rocked but was badly recieved). American movies, by americans for americans. If you have a question about the movie industry its answer usually lies in the state of affairs in the US. Not bieng in the US and not having insight into that we nonmericans often don't get why they make things like they do.
No insult to Americans inteded whatsoever, just stating observations.
Well the theory checks out for the latest "hit" , the movie 300, where we can all see some analogy to RL affiars. then again most countrys make movies that are actuall to them.
Quote from Wikipedia about box office sales:
Released in 3,307 theaters, Battlefield Earth grossed $21,471,685 in the United States and a total of $29,725,663 worldwide, falling doubly short of its $73 million production budget and $30 million in estimated marketing costs. Financially, it is regarded as one of the great box office failures.
Looks like it sold more in the US than the rest of the world. btw the movie is based on a book written by the founder of Scientology which Im sure didnt help it sell as Scientology is considered a cult in parts of the world.
The film's exceptionally bad reviews and poor word-of-mouth led to a precipitous falling-off in its weekend grosses. Having grossed $11,548,898 from 3,307 theaters on its opening weekend, its take collapsed to $3,924,921 the following weekend, prompting theaters to abandon the film in droves. The film made 95% of its entire domestic gross in the first two weekends and flatlined thereafter. By its sixth weekend on release, the film was showing at only 95 theaters and had made only $18,993 in a week - less than $200 per theater. [15]
I think the reason UE hit the box office so hard is cause it was the only relatively good action movie playing at the time, cant say the same for battlefield earth.
Underworld 1 was good for a semi cheap action flick, and I think many people expected more in the sequel, if they had a better script maybe it would be considered as good as the first. (basicly they recycle the script from the first movie)
