Building something new
« on: 2007-01-11, 02:04:26 »
I'm constucting the Resident Evil mansion, again. Yes. I know but this new project will feature the entire mansion as one big giant map rather than a bunch of small maps thrown together.  The re-design is to be based on the game cube version of RE, but will have differences. The map will be made for Redemption first from scratch using normal in-game textures then I'll convert it over to Doom 3 with newer higher res bumpmap textures.

So far I have quickly finished most of the East side of the new mansion design. This is going much faster than my first attempt at building this mansion over 4 years ago where it used to take me 4 hours to build each room. Now I can build half the mansion within a day (in a preliminary kind of way). I'm sure the mansion will be a frame hog for the older computers so you'll need something faster than a 700-800mhz pc with a good video card.

This mansion will be properly scaled based on these map images I have taken that are attached below. Upon completion of this mansion, I will consider a site update. I do not have a release date for this project, but I am enjoying its construction so far.

hmm.. this means all the map from RE1-0? what ever happened to that mega city map you where working on? that seem like a usefull map... (im not saying that RE maps are useless, im just asking if you ever plan on finish that mega city map.)

I'm not making any models right now. I'm merely using Embrace to construct the mansion then I'll build the garden, guest house, and lab (with some new ideas of my own). Right now I'm concentrating on structure only and am skipping details as well as lighting. Once the structuring is finished I will need models for furnishings and other details that can't normally(practically) be accomblished with Embrace mapping.

I was thinking about making RE0 maps too. As for constructing a city; no plans yet. I may want to build a real map based on my home town, but building cities are quite a large task of which I am not actually familiar with. I'll most likely stick with content that can be transfered to Doom 3 without much issues. So I'll pretty much make horror or sci-fi related stuff. Building an exterior+interior mansion will be hard enough and that's only ONE building. A city consist of SEVERAL buildings.

Well I got a lot done, but after looking at the RE1 maps, I got some scaling to fix. The main hall is not big enough and the dining room needs to be longer. Shit! This mansion is HUGE. I got the First floor of both sides of the mansion mostly done (The scale fixing is going to set me back).

I'm going to use custom textures if possible. I need to find some good cracked walls that are of decent res (at least 512x512). If not then I'll try to modify the existing game textures so to spruce them up with added detail and res.

The models I can use the most of would involve complex architecture and furniture not normally possible by the Embrace map editor. So I would like people who have the RE1-0(GC version) games that can note all of the OLD furniture in the mansion and other locations that have lots of CURVES in its design. This includes the pianos, complex lamps, chandeliers, pillars, complex doors (yes door models too), statues, complex chairs, sofas, beds, toilets, tubs, and other small and large objects that could be made as models. I know that the mansion is surrounded by a thick forest so I would need large and tall (LOW POLY COUNT) pine trees that have very high quality textures (to make up for low polies). I need someone to make forest thickets that can act as a WALL and prevent players from seeing the sudden cutoff ledge of a map.

I would want high-quality work with textures no less than 512x512 res (The max the engine can handle) that have good crisp detail. Do note that I would demand even HIGHER quality when I convert the project over to Doom3, but it will be made for Redemption first. I really doudt people will want to help in this manner for such an old game so I wont hold my breath. For now, I'll stick with pre-included stuff unless someone wants to take serious initative.

I decided to take today off from school, sense I'm ahead in my class work, to work on the mansion a little bit. I still need to do the second floor of the dining room side of the mansion as well as the third floor and basement then I can work on the exterior of the mansion, which will include the front entrance and the back where the cemetery and guarden are. I don't know what to do for the front entrance sense NONE of the versions of Resident Evil have ever shown it so I'll try to make something up. If someone has an idea of what the front of the mansion could look like then feel free to pop in ideas.... maybe some scetches of what you would LIKE to see for the front entrance. When I say front entrance, I mostly mean terrain. I have a fairly good idea of what textures and design to use for the actual mansion structure itself, but surrounding terrain is a different story.

So to narrow things down I will say that 'This mansion will be built with extreme high quality custom content or there will be NO custom content in it - just default Redemption stuff.' I would make the mansion bare if I have to, but the less help I recieve, the longer this will take, but I'm not going to depend on someone to continue this project. This mansion will be built with or without peoples help.

Nice, sounds like fun :)

Check out this site for textures, I get a lot of my stuff here
http://www.cgtextures.com/

If you need help with making textures tile etc then just send me a pm with the images you want tileable and a copy of each with a box arround the section you want to use as a tiled texture.

Good luck ;)

Ok the second floor of the west side mansion is fairly done. Now I have the 3rd floor and basement to do. After that I need to do exterior. NOTE: I am designing without details or lighting - I'll add those later.

Ok I decided to post up some images of the original RE game from the GC with my camera. This is placed here for anyone interested in modeling and would like to help. Just look at some of these attached images and see what you can build from them. I'll post more resources as I compile them. If anyone else has more resources that can help this project you can add (weblinks, images, ect) feel free to post them up.
