Time says PS3 was a bust
PlayStation 3 one of five things magazine says "went from buzz to bust"; calls console "hideously expensive," launch titles "lame."

When the New York Times said the PlayStation 3 "just isn't that great" in November, many Sony fans were up in arms. However, those words were relatively kind compared to what Time had to say. In naming its "5 Things That Went From Buzz to Bust" for 2006, the magazine put the PS3 right up there with Snakes on a Plane, O.J. Simpson's If I Did It book proposal, and Bode Miller's goose egg at the Winter Olympics. The piece begins harshly: "The big story in computer games this year was HOW TO BLOW A HUGE LEAD, by Sony." (capitals in original), which continues brutally ("The PS3 is hideously expensive," "the launch titles were lame"), and ends with a playground insult ("You know you're in trouble when you get beat by something called a Wii"). Time's disdain for the PS3 isn't unprecedented. For the console's launch, the magazine also ran an article titled "Sony's PlayStation 3 Is Not Worth the Hype."

Hmmm...

I don't like the New York Times as they have been known to be biased and PARTISON towards individual views. I have a hard time taking anything The NY Times says as serious because it cannot be abjective towards various points of view. I don't think they are taking a professional stance on this so here's my 2 cents.

I think I'll approach this with less bias. I do remember that 360's launch also was deemed as 'sucky' and came with vast bugs as well as a lack of good games. On the other hand, Nintendo seems to have the only really successful launch in a long time with only a few hiccops, but does this mean that the Wii will be an overall success? I tend to want to think of this as a marathon. Just because you sprinted ahead of everyone at the start of the race doesn't mean you'll end at first place.

From what I hear developers are keeping an eye out for any changes to the ps3. I hear that ps3 is having lag problems at its initial launch with some of its 'heavy' titles. I remember the first launch of the ps1 having almost 10,000 units that were completely faulty and sony corrected that issue by launching replacement units. The ps1 became the hottest system of that time as the games kept racking up and the prices kept dropping.

The 360 is having quite a bit of success with its recent titles, but how often do some really awesome titles launch for the 360? I'm begining to wonder if this is just a convenient success for 360 and that things may change within one year. I'm waiting to see what direction Capcom, Square Enix(once known as Squaresoft), and Konami decides to take as those are my favorite software companies. What ever they decide, I may choose to follow.

I consider it like this:

The Wii is cheap, but revolutionary controll but not one of the best graphis

The Xbox360 is on the middel grounds, it offers the latest Graphics but will probably not Co-op with DX10 but has a softer price

The PS3 is the UBar, Supah dupah graphics censentrated console that will prolly also support DX10 like games, it has a (stonen in my POV) motion sensor and a vast backup of good games but it really comes with a steep price.

The PS3 isnt the all-bells-and-whistles machine Sony hyped it up to be. Out of all the launch games, the only one worth getting was Resistance Fall of Man. The rest were available on the 360 and Wii, with the 360 versions boasting better resolution textures and smoother framerates and the Wii versions having better motion-sensitive controls.

The 360 will support DX10. The only reason Microsoft wont release DX10 onto PCs without Vista is because they dont want to, its not a technology thing its because they want to give people a reason to upgrade their OS. I find it hard to believe MS would knowingly produce a machine at such a price to their company (the Xbox brand is only now just starting to turn a marginal profit) that wouldnt support DX10 a year down the line.

The PS3 is massively overpriced and i believe Blu-Ray will go the way of Betamax, Minidisc and UMD...Sony just arent that good at making new media stuff, their hardware is great (apart from this PS3 fuck up) but thats it. All its games are going to be the same as last time, sequels. Theyve already pulled development of Gran Turismo HD and theyre too lazy to have secured exclusivity deals with publishers/developers.

Look at the games theyve already missed out on: Assassin's Creed & GTA IV to name two. The you've got the exclusive stuff like Gears of War, Viva Pinata, Project Gotham Racing, Bioshock, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Mass Effect etc. They already missed out on gems like Oblivion (yes its coming out soon but who cares now? It was released fucking ages ago!), Ghost Recon AW, Call of Duty 2, Rainbow Six Vegas etc. coz they took too long to make the machine!

Sony have well and truly fucked up BIG time this generation for thinking they could wait a year, then introduce an overpriced machine that cant do what they said it could do...and they think the public are just going to carry on as normal? The cheapest PS3 that is available is $500! You can get a premium 360 for $400 or something! Theyre selling those at £280 over here with a free wireless pad and two games!!

Im in no way a MS fan-boy, i have a PSP now and have owned an original Playstation, a PSOne, and a PS2.

As for Capcom in particular, well...what can i say? What games have they released for the PS3 yet??? What games do they have in production for it now? Resident Evil 5 is all that i know of. Theyve already released Dead Rising and Street Fighter II Turbo on the 360. Lost Planet is coming out in January, Dead Rising 2 and Lost Planet 2 are already in pre-production (and are 360 exclusives - see what i mean about Sony being lazy in securing exclusive games?) and Resident Evil 5 is coming out for the 360 at the same time as PS3.

Square have already released Final Fantasy XI on the 360 and i find it hard to believe they'll just stay with Sony in the coming years, they said goodbye to Nintendo after YEARS didnt they.

As for Konami, not sure what theyre doing, not even sure what franchises they have anymore apart from Metal Gear.

Regarding the 360 launch, the only thing i remember was the lack of consoles. There were no bugs with the system, there never have been (apart from a few launch consoles dying, which is inevitable - look at the PS2 launch). As for games, the was Project Gotham Racing 3, Kameo (still one of the best-looking games ive ever played), Condemded, Perfect Dark Zero, Call of Duty 2, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Full Auto, King Kong,  Madden 06, GUN, Ridge Racer 6, Quake 4, Tony Hawks, Amped 3, Tiger Woods, 2 different NBA games, Fifa 06 and NHL 2K6.

As for the PS3 launch, well of the original 30 titles they said that it was going to launch with, 18 made it...12 of which were already out on the 360 with better framerates and textures. Of the 6 exclusive titles that got released with the machine, the only ones that got above and 8 score on Gamespot were Resistance and Ridge Racer 7. The others got 6.4 (Genji), 5.7 (Full Auto 2), 3.7 (Mobile Suit Gundam) and 6 (Untold Legends). Thats why i have no confidence in this machine.

No bias, the machine just has crap games and is too expensive...oh and is a year behind the 360 with nothing more to add apart from motion sensitive controllers...that dont rumble anymore.
