Nutcases line up for PS3
« on: 2006-11-16, 05:25:28 »
A bunch of fruit-loops have been waiting for a couple of days to get a massively overpriced machine with average games that look no better than those on a Xbox 360!  ;D

Sony fans play the waiting game
Dozens of would-be PS3 owners have begun camping out at Sony's official PlayStation store in San Francisco in the hopes of being among the first to buy the new system.
By Curt Feldman, GameSpot

SAN FRANCISCO--It takes a unique brand of dedication to line up and wait for the privlege of lining up and waiting somewhere else.

As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, a line of about 65 people had formed across the street from Sony's flagship PlayStation and Sony Style stores in the Metreon at the corner of Fourth and Mission Streets. While there's no doubt the line is for the PlayStation 3, Sony corporate mandated that no "official" line was allowed at the Metreon before 8 a.m. Thursday, so this line formed on Minna St. as a place to wait until there's an official line to join.

The line was a calm affair, most people lounging in beach chairs or milling about in the balmy 60-degree weather. They were hunkering down for the long wait until the following morning, when what they hope will be an orderly transition to official status is expected to be facilitated by Sony staffers.

To manage the transition from rogue gathering to official PS3 queue, the fifth person in line, Gieson from the East Bay, had created a list. "As long as no one bum rushes, it'll be fine," Gieson said.

Sony staffers inside the PlayStation store made it clear that they could disperse the currently building line at any time, but privately added as long as those in line remained peaceful and orderly, breaking up the line was unlikely.

The first in line, Chris from San Francisco, said he and his friends decided to start the camp out on a whim. They came by the Metreon today at 5 a.m., and noticing there was no one waiting and no lines formed, they quickly went on a supply run--securing tents and food--returning around 9 a.m. to camp out in the pole position. Most of the crowd had made no more preparation than wearing heavy coats and lugging some additional clothing and food.

A group of five grad students from the University of California San Francisco passed the time playing cards and tossing a football. The group, all bio-physics researchers, planned to sleep in shifts and keep an eye peeled for foul play. However, once in line, plans have a way of changing. One of the group expressed concern for how they would pass the time until the 8 a.m. transition to a Sony-sanctioned line, saying, "I don't know if sleep's a realistic option."

The line members' vigil should come to an end Friday at 12:01 a.m., when Sony's PlayStation 3 game console officially goes on sale. And while Sony's big launch event is taking place at SonyStyle Plaza on Madison Ave. in Manhattan, there will be plenty of activities happening in San Francisco to report on.

NYC loves PS3
Hundreds line up in front of the SonyStyle store in midtown Manhattan; spirits are high with less than 24 hours before the system's launch.
By Tim Surette, GameSpot

NEW YORK CITY--The most hardcore of hardcore gamers were out in abundance in New York City Wednesday night, all hoping for a chance to score a PlayStation 3.

Gamers lined up outside SonyStyle Plaza in midtown Manhattan knew that their best chance of getting a PS3 was waiting in front that store. While other retail outlets were stuck with only a handful of systems, the PS3 bash there promised hundreds of Sony's next-gen console for sale.

Herded without opposition by Sony security guards, hundreds of gamers lined the street and even began wrapping around the corner of the next block. Spirits were high as a pseudo-commune formed, each participant allied by an equal goal--get a PS3 on November 17.

Throughout the huddled line, the hopeful were crammed close together and sat in folding chairs more suitable for the beach than the hard asphalt of Manhattan. Diversions included gaming on PSPs, idle chit-chat, the occasional Nintendo DS, and the classic book. While most were receptive to the slightest bit of media attention, some campers covered their faces, perhaps protecting their "being sick and can't work" alibis.

Though one would expect harsh weather in New York at this time of the year, the weather seemed forgiving for those in line, hovering in the 60s and merely overcast. The weather gods appear ready to test those tomorrow though, as thunderstorms have been forecast for the area on Thursday.

The gamer with the claim to being first in line is New York native Angel Paredes, who arrived at the store Monday evening. Though his commitment to getting a system day one was met with some resistance from his family, the temptation was too much to resist.

"I've been waiting for this system for over a year," Paredes told GameSpot. His family, who now understand his plight, have supplied him with food and even held his space in line for a few hours while he went home, showered, and revisited the luxury of having a roof over his head.

Though the launch of the system is still a full day away, those in line exuded a feeling of being in the home stretch. Paredes and the other hopeful PS3 owners are doing this together and have built a common bond.

"I've made a bunch of new friends," said Paredes, smiling and gesturing to those in line behind him.

Though there is the temptation of hawking a system for profit for all those who are lucky enough to score a PS3 on Friday, most of those waiting in front of the Sony Store in New York seemed content to keep theirs. However, a few dissenters did seem to opt for the quick cash.

"I'm totally happy with my Xbox 360 right now. I've got Gears of War sitting at home," said a man in line. "I may get a PS3 later, but for now, I think I'm selling mine."

Hopefully for those in line, the wait will culminate in a brand new PS3 early on Friday morning. Sony plans on kicking off its launch festivities at 9 p.m. EST, with the first PS3 sold in North America being handed out to Paredes at midnight. Those waiting at the end of the line be warned--Sony has announced that only the first 400 in line will get into the party and have the chance to buy a console. As for the others? Well, there's always the next shipment.

In contrast to the SonyStyle Plaza, a few major retail locations in the popular shopping area of Times Square were near empty. Both Toys "R" Us and Virgin Megastore in the famed district were barren. One employee at Virgin confirmed to GameSpot that the store only expected about five units for the system's launch.

I'm sorry, but waiting for over a day outside a shop for a fucking console is ridiculous. I didnt wait in line for my 360, i just bought one in the new year. Personally, if i bought one on day one id flog it on ebay for triple what i paid for it! I remember seeing 360s going for over a grand on ebay last year, oh and i heard about someone being shot dead in the US for one as well!

I don't undertand this. Sony admits the console is still flawed and says a firmware upgrade will be needed to make it compatible with some future games. Also, come February the prices will drop signifigantly when the hype is gone and they have to compete. Why buy now?

I work in an electronic store, lol. So we got all the info and promo stuff for it, and I was reading through it, its really not all that great, lol. I remember reading an article somewhere about that sony had a huge list of what they wanted to put in to the PS3, and only 20% of it went in. Most people who I talk to at work((customers, co-workers)), alot of them say, that the Wii, is gonna kick everyone's ass, heh. Alot of it is because of the nunchuk controllers, and plus you can play all of the classics, heh.((you gotta download them, and they will cost points, like the 360 has, but still)). I think one of the gamecube's problem was of the game selection, most of them were for kids. I read a list, what games will come out for Wii so far, one of them was call of duty 3, and most of the new ones, but also, I know that Nintendo was talking to rockstar, and they said that they would put Grand theft auto 4 also for Wii((GTA 4, comes out October 2007)). One thing about the controller is of course the motion sensor, so it will be great for sword games, such as the new zelda game, and an other one comming out, called Red Steel, but with that being said, how flexible will it let you be?, I assume, it will be just up, down, left and right, when it comes to fighting with the sword, but I guess we wont know untill we find out, lol.

The PS3 has every chance of being a flop. Come March next year when its released in the PAL regions, the 360 will have such a head start its not going to be able to claw that back. As for price drop in the new year, i dont think Sony will be able to do that. Theyve currently announced a $1.71billion loss so far in developing the PS3, add to that a loss on every one sold. Microsoft currently make a loss on every 360 sold and theyre flying off the shelves here in the UK with Christmas coming. Im seeing deals for the premium pack (so thats headset, hard drive, wireless controller - retails for £300+), another wireless controller (£33) and two games (£40-50 each) all for £280 all over the place.

In the PAL regions Sony have lost already. It'll be like the Megadrive/SNES days. Sega released the Megadrive over a year before the SNES and the lead it had in sales was unbeatable by the time the SNES came out. Same thing is going to happen with the 360 & PS3. The PS3 is slightly better than the 360 on paper, but the end result is that the games play and look the same on both systems. The extra price is because of the Blu-Ray drive, sorry but im not prepared to buy into either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD until one is the clear winner. Look back at Betamax and VHS, Betamax was a Sony product and that lost out to VHS in the end. Sony are too arrogant, and i sincerely hope they fall flat on their faces with the PS3, quite a lot of movie companies have shunned Blu-Ray as its too costly apparently - look at the problems Sony have had in manufacturing the drives! They have too little exlcusive titles on the machine. Resistance: Fall of Man is the Blu-Ray poster child weighing in at 22GB, but the game looks no more impressive than what ive seen of Halo 3. At least Microsoft give users a choice if they want to shell out for a HD-DVD drive, they dont just make the 360 use the technology (movie technology) and add £130 to the price of the machine.

As for Wii, im really intrigued about it. But im afraid the machine will be too kiddie-oriented (i doubt GTA4 will come out at the same time as the 360 & PS3 versions, even if it does it wont have the content of the other two - 360 has exclusive content downloads) and the controllers will become a gimmick. But this is Nintendo and the gamble with the DS has paid off (22 million sold in 24 months or something like that - beats the sales of PSP). Thing is that no one company is immortal, look at what happened to Sega! Their experiments with their hardware made them a laughing stock and led to the close their hardware side of things (Mega-CD, 32X were a mess - Saturn wasnt good enough at 3D - Dreamcast was brilliant, a real PS2 beater but coz of the Saturn it flopped). If Nintendo cock this up then i dont think they'll do very well. Mind you, the amount of hype and the amount of machines theyve made should make it a winner - plus the cheap price compared to the George Foreman grill...sorry, PS3, should hopefully save it.

Overall, i hope Sony fail miserably with the PS3. That might make them wake up and smell the coffee. Gamers arent going to pay top whack for something thats no better than a machine thats been out for a year already. It'll be good for the industry as well, no-one wants one company holding a monopoly on things.

Gears of War Collectors Edition came through the door this morning...missus wont let me play it coz its a Christmas prezzie. Bitch!

P.S. Just read something on Gamespot about the prices of PS3 to manufacture: the 20GB PS3 costs $805.85 to manufacture and has a retail price of $499. The 60GB PS3 costs $840.35 to manufacture and costs $599. Thats a loss of $306.85 & $241.35 per machine sold!!! Also read that a line of 15-20 people waiting for the PS3 launch were held at gunpoint and robbed. One man refused to cough up any cash and was shot in the chest and shoulder!!!  ;D

Unlike Sega, Nintendo's ventures didn't land them on their asses so much. At least Nintendo's systems worked and weren't plagued with bugs due to rush jobs. Out of all of Nintendo's systems, I would say Virtual Boy was their ONLY biggest failure unlike the mass amount of crap Sega was spewing out.

I have decided I will be getting nintendo wii this sunday by trading in my ps2 and current gamecube along with my ps2 games. I should get a total of $150 off with my MVP account over at gamecrazy. I'm gonna stick with nintendo and see where it takes me...

Sometimes, all I want is some lite-hearted games.

Today wasn't as crazy as I thought it would be((here anyways)), but we did have people getting in line, at 10pm the night before, We sold out even before the doors open, half the people who bought one, didn't buy one for themselfs, its so they could sell it on ebay for double the price.

Doesnt surprise me in the slightest that the majority want to make a huge profit by selling them on auction sites, all power to them.

I just hope that the Wii doesnt turn out to be a flop. I dont think it will (I mean the Zelda game coming out on launch day - tomorrow for you yank bastards, 8th Dec for us Brits! - has been in development for several years and was supposed to be out on the Gamecube) but i think that companies apart from Nintendo wont use the controllers properly. As everyone knows, Nintendo dont churn out games do they. They release a few gems throughout their machines lifetimes and thats about it. Thing is, they sold Rare to Microsoft and Rare were a BIG part of their game-releases from the SNES days onwards. Remember that Rare made some of the most successful games for Nintendo's hardware - Donkey Kong Country 1-3 on the SNES, Goldeneye and the Banjo-Kazooie games on the N64 & Kameo was originally a Gamecube game til they sold the studio off to MS.

You have to admit that the Gamecube wasnt exactly the best machine of the last generation. I bought one solely to play the remake of Resident Evil, RE Zero & RE4. Those games and the remake of Metal Gear Solid for the machine are the only games i have for it!!

What does make me laugh is the mess Sony have got themselves into. Have you ever tried playing a FPS on that horrible pad? The analogue sticks are horrible! They havent changed the design of the pad for this generation as they didnt have the balls to use that banana/boomerang shaped thing. Then they saw that Nintendo were doing motion-sensitive stuff so shit themselves and added in a massively inferior version. But because they were using the old pad they had no room to keep the rumble tech inside! Then they saw that the 360 has the guide button to access dashboard features in-game so they added a little button to do the same thing on theirs! Add to that the carbon-copy of Xbox LIVE with different names for features and the extortionate pricetag - if it doesnt flop ill eat my underwear!!  ;D

I read yesterday on a forum somewhere that the PS3 version of Call of Duty 3 is identical to the 360 version, except that it has terrible framerate issues! That just proves that the PS3 is no better than the 360. The way Nintendo have set the Wii up as not competing against PS3 & 360 is a really well-thought out marketing strategy. I believe that most households will have a 360 or a Wii, or both as you can probably get both machines for the price of one PS3!

Well I don't plan to buy a 360 anytime soon. I would decide to upgrade my pc before hand. Pretty much my nintendo will be for the nintendo exclusive stuff and my pc will be for the more heavy stuff. I'll be upgrading my vid card in the spring of next year and see if that's enough to play Gears of War sense it's rumored to be ported over to pc soon after 360 launch.

Well so far I have several games for my gamecube. I have 9 games for my gc and they are pretty good. I don't plan to get rid of any of them. On the ps2 side I have several games that I notice can be found pretty easily on a pc port so I'll be getting rid of them and buying a pc controller sometime soon.

Yeah, GoW is coming out on pc but it wont be out for ages. At the earliest it'll be out in around March as the 'Only on Xbox 360' tag on 360 game boxes mean exclusivity for a minimum of 3 months.
