New WoD game coming...

I was reading the news section of Gamespot UK yesterday and came across some news that a MMORPG set in the WoD universe is being made by CCP (the guys who made EVE Online). Probably going to be called 'Vampire the Masquerade: .....' if theyre going to keep the recognised name, or it could be a new name altogether. Anyway, here's the full news article:

CCP and White Wolf merge
New combined company working on MMOG based on The World of Darkness; new online and offline science-fiction, horror, and fantasy games also in the works.

Icelandic publisher CCP Games, maker of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game EVE Online, has joined forces with pen-and-paper role-playing game gurus White Wolf. The collaboration will see a version of White Wolf's World of Darkness turned into an MMORPG. In addition, White Wolf will bring EVE Online's game world to more traditional RPG formats, with strategy guides, collectable card games, role-playing systems, and a series of novels.

White Wolf was founded in 1991 in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and describes itself as a "company dedicated to redefining the art of storytelling." It publishes the pen-and-paper RPG The World of Darkness, which is set in a fictional realm populated by vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures, as well as ordinary humans going about their day-to-day lives. The company is also known for the Vampire: The Masquerade role-playing games.

CCP Games, or Crowd Control Productions, was formed in 1997 and is based in Reykjavik, Iceland. The company's main product, EVE Online, recently opened in China, where it landed 200,000 registered users on its first day. The sci-fi game sees players choose from a variety of spaceships to pilot and then undertake missions, trade, fight, research, and explore the persistent online world.

The companies will continue to operate under their original names, with White Wolf becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of CCP. Hilmar Petursson, CEO of CCP, will be the CEO of the combined company.


There's some losers out there on the WW forums bitching that CCP has 'aggressively aquired' WW and that WW products will suffer, blah, blah, blah but that's just bollocks as CCP arent a massive company. They only have one game out there and thats EVE (which is bloody good if youve played it). Personally, i think that the content has a dev team that actually know what theyre doing and wont fuck it up like Nihilistic and Troika have so far. Both Vampire games, while basically good, could have been so much better. Hopefully, this MMORPG will be a good thing. I for one will be playing it and registering my name so no other cunt takes it, providing its good!!

Pitty they wont produce a normal cRPG game, while I like MMORPGs, I dont have as much time to spend on them, not to mention the 10$  monthly fee they will probably ask.

Im not sure why Torika didnt finish VTMB probably but I heard its cause of lack of time, they tried to do too much with too little and ended up bankrupt, shipping an unfinished title.

Nahilistic knew what they were doing. I dont see any flaw in thier production apart from the fact that we cant mod skeletons cause no one can find that old version of Maya to make that plugin work with.

Nah i think Nihilistic fucked up with the engine...the game itself was good though. I remember years ago that there was something to do with not being enough strings to have a load of mods or something along those lines. The way Nihilistic cocked up is that they underestimated the populairty of the franchise. I dont think they expected as much bedroom made content for the game. Plus the fact that there was zero support from the company after the game was shipped. They released a patch and the not editor...whoah!!!

I remember initially being very pissed off that i couldnt make my own storylines like the couple of extra multiplayer storylines they included in the game from the start. I wanted to do that kind of stuff straight out of the box. Not have to wait for Spock to release some tools to enable me to do it.

Considering Trokia had the HL2 engine, they fucked up big style. I still havent been able to get through the opening cinematics without something cocking up. Be it, lip synch, that big blokes coat flapping about or the vampire that gets its head chopped off, or the 'floating' people walking when their legs cant be seen. Plus, no multiplayer and basiclly just a shit use of the Source engine. Bloodlines was a huge dissapointment.

Hopefully, CCP will make a really good MMORPG out of the content they have to work with. These guys actually listen to their customers and implement stuff theyve asked for. EVE is a brilliant game and the world theyve created feels alive. If they can do that with another Vampire game then it'd be brilliant.

aculy redemption was advanced for its time when I found bout the game, altho support thats not offered is a big blunder on likely everying.

And yeah bloodlines was totaly screwed when it comes to engine code. The main reason was that the messed a bit too much with the engine. Those who played HL² know that it is capable of bringing smooth gameplay, and good support for lower and systems. wich were things troika took out, My guess is that they ruined some shaders and shadows, those were what bothered me the most. And both are quite some nasty powersucker items.

I saw eve videos and screen, awesome graphics, thus giving me the idea the game will have decent graphs, combine this with MMORPG, more unique char development and WOD = Party.

Only thing I now miss is the U3 engine :-p

I didn't think the Redemption engine was a complete failure. I thought the engine works fine once you get to know it. Most of its problems can be worked around.

More likely it'll be called Vampire the Requiem rather than Masquerade. WoD has abandoned the Masquerade series in favor of the new Requiem series.

Yeah I was just gonna say that, lol. I kind of read up a bit on Requiem, and I wasn't impressed. If they do use Requeim, which they probably will, I don't think I would ever get into it

So as gaming is a business they might just keep the name and add a new subtitle. Or, as Bloodlines was such a horrible mess they might want to get away from the entire name altogether.

As for more news...i think thats going to be it for a long time! It was only just announced at CCPs last conference the other day in Iceland, and then it was only announced coz they told the world of the partnership. It'll take a good year or so id expect for anything to come to light, at least screenshots or concepts. They'll probably drip-feed info until they have something to show off.

Hell, sometimes I play snes over 360, lol.
