Yeah but whats stopping people from making the same games on PC?
Metal Gear Solid, for example had a PC version, FF Also came out on PC eventually. And I think you are forgetting that Fallout and Fallout 2 ( the best cRPGs) were made for PC.
As for alot of PC games getting redundant, its only cause the Consols taking alot of the market share, forcing developers to make a game based on a profitable certified formula(fps's for example) rather than experiment with new generes. the result is that the only companys that are actually making innovative gameplay are companys who can afford to take that calculated risk, like Blizzard or Bethseda softworks.
Everyone likes to use fallout as an example, but the pc genre has yet to recreate it. It's been how long sense that game came out? The pc gaming world is having trouble - I read an article on this and will have to find it again, but it said that the console world is doing better than the pc world when it comes to game development. Notice that most of port overs from console are complete shit? None of them ever take advantage of the pc's power or control capabilities. The FF ports are crap and I will never buy another one ever again. I'll stick with console for all FF games.
Whats stopping the same games from being made for PC? The problem is that most people don't actually view the PC as a 'gaming machine' sense most of the time they are used for professional purposes. To make a PC into a gaming machine usually cost tons more than just buying a console system. You also need to think about simplicity. Not everyone understands computers. You can't just stick a game cd in a computer and be playing a game within a minute intill you 'install' the game. There's no installation needed for most console systems.
Did you know it costs considerably more to make games for the pc than for a console system? Think about this: The reason is mainly due to the vast kinds of computers out there in the industry. If you want your game to work with most of them, you'll have to pay more for the additional programming and testing. When it comes to console systems, they are all pretty much the same so when you make a game for one ps2, you pretty have made the game for ALL ps2 systems. This is NOT true for the pc world and most game developers wont spend that kind of money to make it true for their game. There are too many graphic chipsets out there, too many driver conflicts to test, constant changes in operating systems. It's not easy making a pc game for everone and the profits usually do not return to the developer.
Blizzard spent a TON of money to get their game to work for pretty much all computers. I haven't encountered a pc that can't play diablo2, yet. Games that make tons of money on the pc are usually by the gaming industry super power who can afford the anormous costs needed to make their games WORK.
As long as computers vary so widely, making game development difficult for all computers, the console gaming world will continue to exist.
